Well, it took me quite a long time to make the big purchase but I finally have my iMac. All 27 inches of it (simply couldn't get by with the smaller option). I must say the arrival of it could have been enjoyed more were I a) not at work at the time and b) My other half wasn't stuck in traffic on her way home. Yes, I was waiting for her to get back before opening the box, I had pestered her and talked about it non-stop for the past 5 years, she should at least get to take part in the unveiling of it in the house.
The box was massive, much like IKEA, the items always look a lot smaller before you get them home. Placing the iMac on the desk at first looked ridiculous, the large screen that had replaced the teeny laptop monitor was so big and bright, we thought it would always look a little out of place, until the next day coming down the stairs and seeing it there, it looked perfect, like it had always been there.
The first setup was as simple as turning an iPhone on for the first time, follow a few steps and you're in. No bloatware to contend with so that was it I was ready to go. Only one thing, I had been using Windows my whole life and the shortcuts I had learnt to use had now become (almost) redundant.
So began a new lesson for me, how to navigate OSX, fast and efficiently and without looking like I didn't know what I was doing.
A couple weeks in and I am flying through, I have banked a few shortcuts in my head now (cut, copy, paste, screenshot etc..) but most of the time I enjoy swiping about I tend to ignore them and just do what I want.
One of my biggest gripes so far has to be the discovery that you cannot have more than one iTunes account on a device. Gutted! Well, my girlfriend was when I said that she can't sync her iPhone/iPad to the Mac. "It's ok, you can backup just not sync" I tell her, hoping this will suffice. It doesn't and I am still on the hunt for a solution. I guess you're wondering how I discovered this little issue, well I have subscribed to iTunes Match and when I tried playing a song I was met with an error which pretty much told me no way can you play this song you have registered this device with another email address, come back in 90 days to try again...90 DAYS?! Well I was straight on the phone to Apple Customer Support, after about 20 minutes of finding out what had happened I managed to get it reverted and gain control of my iMac again under my name, my main concern was that I had spent a long time transferring stuff from an old laptop (USB2.0) to the mac and I did not want to start now with the music, as soon as I was back online with my music library I instantly hit the option to download all my music from the Cloud to ensure this did not happen again. One should not suffer like this, especially when paying a premium for your device.
Anyway, the iMac has blended into our lives now, central media server and biggest photo album I've seen. It's grand but it does everything we need it to do and more. I'm very pleased with the purchase and can categorically say now that I will not go back to Windows, especially Windows 8, what a nightmare OS that is.
